New Restuarant in 12 South Flats Development

Veteran restaurateur Miranda Whitcomb Pontes will soon bring a new restaurant to the 12 South neighborhood. Pontes has successfully launched two other concepts in the district: Frothy Monkey and Burger Up. For the home of her newest creation, Pontes chose 12 South Flats, a new mixed-use apartment/retail property currently being developed through a joint venture between H.G. Hill Realty and Southeast Venture.

The restaurant, dubbed “Josephine,” was “born out of my love for this community and the new space coming in,” Pontes said. The new lease for 3,163-square-feet is located at 2316 12th Avenue South, on the end cap of the development closest to the 12 South Taproom & Grill.

The restaurant will highlight old school cooking techniques, emphasize proteins and utilize relationships that Pontes has with her current vendors at Burger Up. “I can tell you what Josephine isn’t. It isn’t fussy, and it isn’t based on another restaurant in another town,” said Pontes.

Phillip Shyatt, recently nominated for the prestigious James Beard Foundation Award, will head up Josephine’s kitchen. Philip’s brother Geoff Shyatt has been tapped as general manager for the new space. Robin Riddell Jones will design the wine list.

When asked about the name, Pontes said, “If my son Landon had been a girl, that would have been his name, Josephine.”

Nick Dryden, who designed both Burger Up locations, will be the architect on the project.

The décor will be neutral and warm, utilizing orange and beige colors, a tiled floor, booth, and banquette seating.

The restaurant will be open six days a week for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. It will seat roughly 130 and have a small outdoor patio and a private dining room for groups.

“We are excited to be bringing this locally owned and operated restaurant to the 12 South neighborhood. Miranda’s new concept will serve as a great new amenity to the residents of the development and the neighborhood. I’m sure it will complement the existing retailers in the area and the new ones we hope to attract to the neighborhood,” said Greg Coleman, broker for Southeast Venture.

The 12 South Flats project will feature a total of 10,000-square-feet of retail space with an expected completion date of August of this year.
